On June 17, 2009 Wooldridge Boat Company’s staff, factory and showroom were proud hosts to members of the Seattle Poggie Club. The Poggies’ are one of the oldest fishing clubs in the northwest, established in 1932.Club members are active in salmon fishing on both fresh and salt water, but also pursue other species such as steelhead, trout, sturgeon, halibut, and bottomfish. The club has also operated a small hatchery and participates and partners in many enhancement and conservation efforts.
The meeting began with Glen Wooldridge talking about the rich history of Wooldridge Boats, including his family’s skilled craftsmanship and innovations that have enabled the company to stand out in today’s competitive marketplace.He also discussed how his company’s unique manufacturing process allows owners to observe their personal craft as it is being constructed and to add their own personal touches.
Poggie Club members were treated to a complete factory tour led by Grant Wooldridge. Grant pointed out the features and processes that have made Wooldridge the most trusted brand around. He highlighted details such as the exclusive outboard jet tunnel which allows for superior handling and performance on skinny fresh water. He showed the Poggies’ the spacious and stable Offshore model line up.Poggie members were able to see firsthand, the extensive internal bracing and gusseting which give every Wooldridge boat incredible strength and ruggedness while maintaining operating economy and superior handling.Several Poggies’ were particularly impressed with the side-door feature, which could facilitate wheelchair bound owners in boarding and disembarking.Dick Kikuchi, current President, and Tom Neu, past President, were especially engrossed by techniques and tools which might have been used by wood boat builders.Tom is the former owner of a custom cabinet business and is a highly experienced and skilled craftsman who appreciates the hallmarks of a quality product.
Following a quick brownie break, Wooldridge Pro Staffer, Captain Nick Kester took the helm. The Poggies’ recognized him as the affable fish catching skipper of All Star Charters Wooldridge 26’ SS Offshore Pilothouse, who is on the water almost daily.He talked about how this season’s Puget Sound fishing is stacking up, given the early success around Sitka. Those who were agile enough to board the trailered boat saw firsthand the effective downrigger setup along with the comfortable and dry cabin.
The evening was wrapped up by the club holding its regular business meeting that also included some great fish stories from the members’ recent excursions!
“We enjoy being involved in events like this” states Grant Wooldridge. “You get to meet first hand with the people that are obviously dedicated to preserving local fishing opportunities and resources”
The Seattle Poggie Club meets on the third Wednesday of every month from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM at the SeattleCityLightBuilding in North Seattle. All of the club meetings are open to the public.
